Like many of our surrounding states, Georgia faces a significant challenge with cat overpopulation, leading to high euthanasia rates in shelters. Several interconnected factors contribute to this issue:

  • Lack of Spaying and Neutering: A primary cause is the failure of pet owners to spay or neuter their cats, allowing for unchecked reproduction. Cats can become pregnant as young as four months old and have multiple litters yearly.
  • Abandonment: An increase in pet abandonment, possibly linked to the pandemic pet adoption boom, has exacerbated the problem, leading to more stray and feral cats.
  • Limited Resources: Shelters are often overcrowded and lack the resources to care for the overwhelming number of cats, resulting in euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals. Georgia is reportedly among the top five states with the highest euthanasia rates.
  • Myths and Misinformation: Despite increased support for sterilization, myths persist, hindering efforts to control the population.
  • Challenges with Community Cats: Many free-roaming, or “community,” cats reproduce without intervention, further exacerbating the problem. Traditional trapping and removal of these cats has proven ineffective due to the “vacuum effect,” in which new unsterilized cats move into the vacated area and continue breeding.

The Mickey and Mouse Project Inc. (MMP) seeks to assist the state of Georgia in addressing cat overpopulation and lessening the suffering of these dear animals:

  • Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Programs: MMP supports organizations across Georgia that implement TNR, a humane method that involves trapping, sterilizing, vaccinating, and ear-tipping feral and stray cats before returning them to their communities. TNR stabilizes cat colony sizes, reduces nuisance behaviors, and helps prevent disease spread.
  • Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Services: MMP partners with veterinary practices that offer affordable or free spay/neuter services to encourage sterilization.
  • Public Awareness and Education: As animal welfare advocates, we emphasize community outreach to educate the public on the importance of spaying/neutering and responsible pet ownership.

While significant effort has been made and progress has been made in Georgia, continued and expanded action is needed to reduce euthanasia rates and improve the welfare of cats in the state. At the Mickey and Mouse Project Inc., we wish to assist in this cause.
